Interview & Prove Your Piloting with SkyWest, Redbird at AirVenture

Tuesday, July 30, 2013 @ 8:00 AM

Redbird Flight Simulations announced that pilots who meet SkyWest's published minimums of 1,500 hours total time, among other criteria, may complete a SkyWest Airlines pilot interview and flight-skills test at AirVenture.

Interested pilots shall present their proof of experience to SkyWest, located directly behind Redbird in Booth #208, and undergo the verbal portion of the interview.  Qualified applicants will then fly Redbird's full-motion King Air 350i simulator to demonstrate their airmanship, proficiency and IFR skills.  While no King Air time is required or expected, proficient IFR skills are mandatory.  Appropriate dress for the interview process is casual airshow attire.

These will be real interviews and SkyWest may extend conditional job offers to those who successfully complete the process!

Wednesday, July 24, 2013 @ 8:00 AM

The House General Aviation Caucus recently announced that it has surpassed 200 members, meaning nearly half of the representatives elected to the House now identify themselves as supporters of general aviation. This record number of lawmakers who recognize the significance of general aviation to local, regional and national communities and constituents comes less than one week after the previous record total of 197 House GA Caucus members was announced. The GA Caucus has grown to one of the largest such groups recognized in Washington.

Small-Airplane Revitalization Bill Passes in House

Monday, July 22, 2013 @ 8:00 AM

New legislation passed through the House last week calling for a restructuring of the FAA's Part 23 certification requirements for the purpose of expediting approvals for safety improvements.  The Small Airplane Revitalization Act aims to remove bureaucratic barriers to evolutionary progress within the industry (for the introduction of new designs and the addition of improvements to old ones); to cut certification costs for manufacturers; and to give manufacturers more responsibility in the certification process.

Industry trade groups spanning from GAMA to NBAA, EAA, AOPA and NATA have all expressed a range of support for the legislation, which now heads to the Senate. If it's approved there, new certification standards could go into effect within the next two years.

IMC Club to Host IFR Proficiency Center at AirVenture

Friday, July 12, 2013 @ 8:00 AM

The IMC Club is partnering with Hartzell Propeller Inc. and its sister company Hartzell Engine Technologies to host an IFR Proficiency Center from Monday, July 29 through Friday, August 2 during AirVenture 2013 in Oshkosh, WI.

Hartzell has secured a flight-line tent where the IMC Club will host daily IFR “brain teasers” in interactive forums followed by lunch for up to 100 guests. The sessions are open to IFR rated pilots or those in training. Admission begins at 10:45 each day.

Radek Wyrzykowski, IMC Club founder and President said, “Most IFR pilots strive to improve their professionalism as they build time. It takes work to get better and learning from others is essential. At Club meetings, we call this “hangar flying”. Our daily program at AirVenture will reflect the same kind of IFR problem solving and thinking skills that we sharpen at our monthly chapter meetings.”

The daily IFR “brain-teasers” and lunch will take place at Hartzell’s IFR Proficiency Center, located immediately south of show center on the flight line.

Monday 7/29: Guest Host, Mac McClellan, EAA
Tuesday 7/30: Guest Host NTSB Member, Earl Weener
Wednesday 7/31: Guest Host Radek Wyrzykowski, president, IMC Club International
Thursday 8/1: Guest Host Mike Goulian, airshow pilot and ATP
Friday 8/2: Guest Host Robert Goyer, Editor-in-Chief, Flying Magazine

FAA to Drop Dated Material From Knowledge Tests

Monday, July 8, 2013 @ 8:00 AM

The FAA has agreed to remove questions that focus on obsolete terms and technologies from airman knowledge tests in response to a request from the co-chairs of an industry/government group that is drafting revisions to training and testing standards.

The industry-led panel identified the obsolete terms and technologies now being removed from FAA knowledge exams.  The acceptance of the group’s recommendations highlights that the FAA is working with the industry to improve pilot testing and training.  David Oord, AOPA Manager of Regulatory Affairs, a co-chair of the working group, requested the action in May with fellow working group co-chair Jason Blair, former executive director of the National Association of Flight Instructors.

As the working group continues its effort to create new certification standards for the private pilot certificate and instrument rating, Oord and Blair encourage pilots to submit formal comments by July 8 on the preliminary drafts of the documents, which can be reviewed here.  The July 8 deadline extended the opportunity for public participation after numerous stakeholders facing an original comment cutoff in May requested more time to study the proposals and incorporate changes.
